SM Syed Khalil, fondly known as CA Khalil, was a Kannadiga NRI businessman who built a legacy of hard work, integrity, and social contribution. Born into a humble family in Bhatkal, Karnataka, he faced immense challenges early in life. The loss of his father even before his birth meant he grew up understanding the value of perseverance and resilience. Despite these odds, he became one of the first chartered accountants from Bhatkal, a significant milestone for the Nawayat community he belonged to.
Khalil’s professional journey began in 1978 when he moved to Dubai. His expertise as a chartered accountant quickly earned him a position at the prestigious Galadari Group. Over nearly three decades, he became a trusted leader within the organization, contributing immensely to its growth and operations across the Gulf region. His sharp acumen and dedication were widely acknowledged in the business community.
Eventually, Khalil took his entrepreneurial spirit further by founding K&K Enterprises General Trading Company in Sharjah. His success in the business world was matched by his commitment to fostering the accounting profession. A founding member of the Dubai chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Khalil actively worked to strengthen the profession and support young accountants in the region.
Syed Khalil SM was also the Chairman of Madhyama Communications Ltd., Mangalore and was known across Coastal Karnataka for his social services and contributions in the fields of Kannada, Konkani languages and their culture.
His remarkable achievements were recognized in 2017 when he was named among the 100 smartest people in the UAE by Arabian Business. This recognition highlighted his stature not only as a businessman but also as a thought leader in the industry.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Khalil was deeply rooted in philanthropy and community service. He played pivotal roles in organizations like Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen and the Rabita Society, leading efforts to promote education and social welfare in Bhatkal and beyond. His contributions to building infrastructure for educational institutions and empowering underprivileged communities earned him immense respect and gratitude.
Even with his professional success and influence, Khalil remained grounded. His values of humility and generosity defined his approach to life. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether through mentoring, financial support, or simply being a source of guidance to those in need.
Khalil passed away in Dubai at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
